Will Ernie Garcia soon become the Philippines’ answer to America’s Tom Jones?

Actor-singer-visual artist Ernie Garcia is lately having his hands full with assignments.  The week after his pre-Valentine concert at Richmonde Hotel he got a call from GMA-7 and was told to report to the story conference of a new teleserye, “My Lover, My Wife”.  After another week, he was already in the Kapuso studio taping the first episode!

“My Lover, My Wife”, featuring Maxene Magalona, Luis Alandy, Nadine Samonte and Marco Alcaraz, is being directed by Joselito Altarejos.  Ernie plays supportive and understanding father to Maxene.

The singer-actor is now gathering materials for a new album.  Upon the advice of Repertory Philippines’ stage director Freddie Santos, Ernie intends to record songs along the beat and rhythm of the R&B, country and rock-and-roll hits by Tom Jones, the Grammy award-winning international recording artist from South Wales.

“I must say it’s a brilliant idea!”, quips Ernie.  “Until now, we still don’t have an established local Tom Jones clone.  Tom Jones is such a marvelous performer with a powerful voice!  I like his style.  I  used to open my concert repertoire with his ‘Kiss’ complete with the signature Tom Jones bumps and grinds!”

Freddie Santos was Ernie’s buddy at Repertory when he appeared in stage plays many years back, shuttling between Rep and Teatro Pilipino under National Artist for Theater Rolando Tinio.
He was the one who conceptualized Ernie’s February concert which had for a theme “love in different languages.

Ernie is contemplating to avail of the songwriting skills of TV host-comedian Joey de Leon.  “I like Joey’s contemporary danceable songs with sexy and naughty lyrics”, says Ernie.

But does Joey still have time to compose new songs, what with his daily shows and travels?

“Well, I can settle for his old compositions as long as they fall under Tom Jones’ category!  Pero ‘wag naman ‘yong lumang-luma”, Ernie says.

Would he mind being called a “Tom Jones copycat”?

“I wouldn’t mind at all.  That’s what I really want to become!”, seriously replies Ernie.

The special screening of Mario O’Hara’s 1985 masterpiece “Bagong Hari” starring Dan Alvaro in the title role scheduled last Saturday, March 5, at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, was called off due to some power supply problem caused by a busted transformer.  All the establishments and offices within the CCP Complex were affected.

All shows scheduled for that day were cancelled.  “ZsaZsa Zaturnnah…Ze Musikal..Back with a Vengeance!” which was supposed to play at 3pm and 8pm had to be cancelled too.  Chris Millado, the musical’s director was at the gate personally saying “Sorry!” to the guests.

O’Hara came very early, and so did Alvaro.  His niece Glaiza de Castro was already on the way to the venue with her parents, brother Alchris Galura and family. Lance Raymundo (who playedEmilio Aguinaldo in O’Hara’s Cinemalaya film ‘Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio’) also came very early to give Direk Mario O’Hara some moral support.  Media practitioners Art Tapalla, Alwyn Ignacio, Noel Mallonga, UPFI’s Nonoy Lauzon and many others also came only to be told about the postponement.

“Bagong Hari” screening has been rescheduled on March 12, 2pm, Saturday.

Puno ang venue ng mga guests who were mostly Ernie’s friends from way, way back, avid followers of his concerts and common friends of Ernie and concert producer Rey Carpio (Grand Monaco Estate Developers, Inc. president).  Sighted immensely enjoying the show were actress-turned TV host (“Up Close and Personal with Marissa del Mar” on Channel 13 every Wednesday evening) Ms. Marissa del Mar,  CREBA officer Ms. Rose Basa, singer-businessman Bobby Valle, WCOPA singing champ Kean Andessa, Atty. Nestor Belardo (the cultural attache of Syria).

Ernie started his show with a Queen number aptly titled “Crazy Thing Called Love” which he performed with pelvic twists and kicks.  Then he went on to interpret two love songs: the first one in Japanese (the original of Renz Verano’s “Remember Me”) and the second one in Chinese.

Ernie’s own take of Santana’s “Smooth” was spiced with dancing with two of his closest pals, Ms. del Mar and Ms. Basa.

Pasok naman si Mark Anthony Carpio who did the upbeat “Sunday Morning” na sinundan naman ng falsetto Southborder song na “Love Of My Life”.

Pasok uli si Ernie with a Japanese love song.  Then, bumanat siya ng “Unchained Melody” at pina-jam sina Bobby Valle at Kean Andessa.  Galing!  Isang makabagbag-damdamin uling “All By Myself” na sinundan ng “Volare”.

Sinundan ito ng “You Made Me So Very Happy”.  Senti time uli sa theme song from the Broadway musical “Chorus Line”, ang “What I Did For Love”.

The dance instructors (DI) took over the dance area with their partners. Minsan pang pinatunayan ni Ernie that he still has what it takes to become a magnetic personality!

It was a splendid performance by someone who is more known as an actor and not as a singer. We asked Ernie where he got the energy that night. It could be because of Buddhist chanting!”

Of course, part of the artistic credit should go to the director Josel Reyes and musical director Bong Nanafranca, leader of the accompanying band, Without Warning.  Congratulations to all involved in the production!

Guerrero Theater, 2/F, Palma Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Ang “Amphitryon” ay isang kakaibang love triangle.  Perfect for the month of hearts!

Tampok sina Lex Amores (sa papel ni Jupiter, ang mangingibig ni Alcmene), Wenah Nagales at Diana Malahay (magka-alternate bilang Alcmene), George de Jesus, Paolo O’Hara, Lucky de Mesa at Natasha Cabrera.

Set designer si Lex Marcos, lights designer si John Batalla, costume designer si Raven Ong at sounds designer si TJ Ramos.

Willie, nagkasakit dahil sa galit!

Willie Revillame

Willie Revillame

So, magsasama rin pala sina Toni Gonzaga at Mariel Rodriguez sa noontime show ng ABS-CBN very soon.

Pak!  Hahahahaha!

Speaking of Rico J. Puno, long, long before Australian teen pop artist Justin Bieber came into the music scene to give us an overdose of “baby, baby, baby, oww!”,  ay nauna ng tatlong dekada si Rico Baby sa kanyang mga immortal songs addressing his love as “baby, baby, baby, yeah!”.

He is the most popular (or “notorious” for his green jokes na kinakagat naman ng mga tagahanga niya, hehehe!) at pinaka-in demand as a solo artist.  No offense meant sa apat pang kasamhan niya.

Hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit may mga entertainment writers na galit kay Charice just because they were not given the chance to interview her!  Anong kasalanan ng bata?  She was there to fulfill her US management office’s commitment to Joel Cruz to perform. And perform she did!

My God, hindi kasupladuhan at kahigpitan ‘yon, trabaho nila ‘yon, and they were just following orders from their boss (whether it’s Oprah Winfrey of David Foster, it doesn’t matter at all!).

Kung resourceful at prolific writers sila, they could have written about Charice’s performance.  They could have dwelt on her showmanship, her style, gestures, hand movements, vocal prowess, fashion sense, etc.

May isang potential matinee idol in the person of stage actor Nicolo Magno, Theater Arts student from UP-Diliman.  Suavely handsome, flawless and fair-skinned, tall, mahusay umarte, magaling sumayaw at umarte!

At take note, makabagbag-tonsils daw ang notes, hahaha!

Ocampo and Snooky Serna

Ocampo and Snooky Serna

Kaya nga, go, Anne, go!” pahayag ni Christian.

“No. We are just friends. It doesn’t mean to say that if I go out with him especially in a faraway Boracay is we are back to each other’s arms. No,” pagtanggi ng matangkad na modelo na nagtapos ng Business at Accounting sa University of Sidney sa Australia.
